Wrong Things to do in Texas Holdem Tournaments

Poker tournaments are fun to play. We can even try to play multiple tables. But there are things we have to avoid doing in Texas Holdem tournaments.

Never play on tilt. When we badly want to win and become too emotional and lose our composure and temper, we go on a tilt and stand to lose every bit of advantage or lead we have. Remember that in Texas Holdem tournaments we should not be greedy to win. We should remain detached from any urge to win but must do our best to play well. Being on tilt prevents us from thinking straight.

Never loose sight of what our opponent might hold. We must always be aware of what the opponent's hand is likely to be. We figure this out by seeing how the opponent reacts to bets - if the opponent often merely calls, check-calls, or if the opponent raises. There are basically 3 categories that the opponent's hand falls into in Texas Holdem tournaments: strong, second best, and weak hands.

If we have a hand like K-Q pre-flop, never raise a small amount. If somebody raised from an early position, count on it, the player probably has an A-K. raising big amounts in Texas Holdem tournaments gives the impression of having a strong hand. We might get several players to fold immediately just because of this bluffed bet. So, often in Texas Holdem tournaments, it's not about the hand; its' about the image we project.

However, never underestimate a check-raise. When an opponent wants to check our bet challenge by raising, it's unlikely that the player is just bluffing. Challengers check-raise in Texas Holdem tournaments in hopes that we would bet so they can raise us in turn. This aggressive stance only means that the opponent has a monster hand to back up showing off a raising confidence.

Never go out there to play Texas Holdem tournaments without a basic knowledge of good money management. For instance, we have to know that winning the blinds as often as possible is a most effective way to increase our chips stack. Hence, good players often aim at stealing the blinds and only later aim at the pot.

Finally, never let our chip stack dwindle continuously in Texas Holdem tournaments. A good supply of chips stack is a great way of intimidating opponents in tournaments. They see that we have enough supply to last a prolonged game and knock down players in the pot with all-ins.
